International conference of the NATO Commanders of the units specialized in Civil-Military Cooperation at the Multinational CIMIC Group

Today took place the first part of the 10 th Edition of the CIMIC Unit Commanders’ Conference at the prestigious setting of Palazzo Foscolo in Oderzo. The event attended by the Commander and Inspector of the Engineering Corps, Brigadier General Francesco BINDI, lasts two days and it is organized by the Multinational CIMIC Group (MNCG) in Motta di Livenza, by delegation from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).

The Conference, which brought together 49 Commanders of the NATO and Partnership for Peace (PfP) CIMIC Units and specialists coming from 19 different Countries, was an occasion to debate with Civil Authorities, representatives of the Padua and Verona Universities, of the Red cross and of the Media, on international matters regarding the Civil-Military Cooperation and Interaction, key factor in all the international scenarios.

The main topic of this year was the Civil-Military Cooperation in “Article 5” Operations, namely the actions taken by the NATO Members in terms of Collective Defence and reaction to an attack. At the event participated as Guest Speakers, General Vincenzo Camporini, former Italian Chief of Defence and currently Vice President of the International Affairs Institute (IAI) and Lieutenant General Ton van Loon, former Commander of the 1° German/Dutch Corps with multi-annual experiences in NATO Headquarters. During his lecture, General Camporini stressed the importance and necessity to know deeply the tradition, the culture, and, in general, the environment where military are deployed, in order to interact with the multiple and diverse civil entities, with which the CIMIC Operators need to interface. Furthermore, the former Italian Chief of Defence highlighted the necessity to develop the CIMIC function regardless the operational areas, be it Crisis Response Operation or Art.5 Operation.
